Eye Health: Vision Basics & Exams

And when you’re not blinking, the tears that are on your ocular surface just evaporate. You’re not distributing new, healthy, clean tears across the ocular surface.” Another thing that can contribute to the dry-eye feeling is the lack of oil being distributed to the eye via your eyelid. “When we blink, we push out a little bit of oil,” Starr said. “It’s critical for healthy tear film. …

The computer analysis will show any distortions of the cornea such as scarring, or astigmatism. This eye test is used to screen patients before they undergo any eye surgery or corneal transplants before they’re fitted for contact lenses. Early eye care for kids helps learning and school performance (Video)

Human Barbie Doll holds the record for most money spent on cosmetic surgery

According to the American Public Health Association, children depend 80% on eyesight for learning. When visual problems are present, children have a distinct disadvantage in learning. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent students from getting behind in school and also manage problems that could cause permanent vision loss. Eye exams are very important because they not only reveal nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, but “lazy eye”, misalignment of the eyes, and problems with focusing, depth perception, color perception, and coordination. Experts recommend children have an eye exam at the age of 6 months, 3 years, and before beginning school. After that, children requiring no vision correction should have an exam every two years and those needing vision correction should be examined annually or according to their doctor’s recommendation.

High blood pressure risk rising among U.S. youths

“It’s a very sneaky thing.” High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a problem in which blood pushes too hard against a person’s blood vessels, potentially causing damage to the vessels and organs like the heart, according to WebMD . Risk factors for hypertension in children include obesity, sodium intake and family history. U.S. dietary guidelines suggest people eat no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, while the AHA recommends an even lower threshold of 1,500 daily milligrams. The AHA estimates 97 percent of children and teens eat too much salt, putting them at risk for high blood pressure and eventual heart disease. For the study, researchers compared more than 3,200 kids between ages 8 and 17 who were part of a nutritional survey from 1988 and 1994 and compared them to more than 8,300 kids who were surveyed from 1999 to 2008. Researchers accounted for differences between the group that could affect the results, such as race, gender, body mass index and daily sodium intake.

Correction: Blood Pressure Story

If blood pressure is a concern, putting on a cuff could help. A new study concluded that those who regularly monitor their blood pressure at home have better numbers than those who don’t. The National Institutes of Health defines high blood pressure as readings higher than 140 systolic (the top number)/ 90 diastolic (the bottom number). In the study, researchers at Tufts Medical Center in Boston found that people who monitored their blood pressure at home improved their systolic numbers by 3.9 points and their diastolic by 2.4 points. Of course, anyone with high blood pressure should be under a doctor’s care. Home blood-pressure monitors can be found at retailers such as Walmart and Target. Amazon.com also has a large selection of monitors.

Test blood pressure at home for good health

Tufts Medical Center in Boston found that people

Reductions continued even after the study ended; in 2011, 87 percent of roughly 350,000 Kaiser patients had recommended blood pressure levels. The study was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. “What’s unique about this is the sheer scale of what they’ve done,” said Dr. Goutham Rao, a family medicine specialist at NorthShore University HealthSystem, a group of four hospitals in Chicago’s northern suburbs.

Vitamins and supplements: The 30-billion dollar rip-off!

Back to school essentials

Marion Nestle, Professor of Nutrition , Food Studies and Public Health at New York University, has noted on many occasions that “many vitamins and supplements may contain impurities and may not have the active ingredients on their label.” There have been numerous scientific studies which have proven that processed oils, minerals, extracts and herbs do absolutely nothing positive for your health and may actually be harmful. Most major media outlets will not report this because some of their largest ads (source of revenue) are from the companies who make these products. The most popular vitamin among both men and women are the famed “multi-vitamins.” There are various brands on the market and they are all the same thing — useless little expensive pills. In a recent study the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, performed 63 random and controlled tests on multi-vitamins. Their final finding were…

The great health supplements con: How firms like Seven Seas and Vitabiotics exaggerate benefits of pills used by millions says Which?

All took advantage of additional ingredients, such as vitamin C or calcium, which do have real and proven health benefits, to imply all of the ingredients were also proven to be effective. Which? pointed out that glucosamine supplements can cost up to 1 per day, while a multivitamin could cost as little as 3p per day. Both could contain vitamin C, which has proven health benefits, as opposed to glucosamine that has none. The consumer groups executive director, Richard Lloyd, said: Its worrying that some manufacturers arent playing fair on the packaging of food supplements. We have campaigned for health claims on these products to be backed up by scientific evidence, so its disappointing that manufacturers are still using clever language to imply unproven benefits. Graham Keen, director of the Health Food Manufacturers Association (HFMA), hit back saying: This new report is inaccurate as it infers that manufacturers are misleading their customers which is simply not true. ‘Just because a certain ingredient does not have an EFSA-approved claim, does not mean that it doesnt have a beneficial effect. He said the reason that EFSA has rejected many claims made for these products is because the assessment process has been too strict.

Shocking survey reveals one in 10 Britons NEVER does any exercise

Exercise not only changes your look, it changes your physiology

The target set by health bosses and ministers is to complete a 30-minute session of moderate exercise such as swimming or walking 12 times a month. Unhealthy: The figures showed that 80 per cent of British people don’t meet Government exercise targets The research found that just over eight per cent of adults had not once walked continuously for five minutes in the previous month, while 46 per cent said they had not walked continuously for 30 minutes. Excess baggage alert! It takes a MONTH to lose the 8lb gained on a two-week holiday (and America is the worst for waistlines) Nine out of 10 had failed to swim and a similar number hadn’t found time to go to the gym.

Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. “They found that, for example, marathon runners have a higher risk of atrial fibrillation. But the vast majority of atrial fibrillation occurs later in life. After 65, about one in five people develops atrial fibrillation over 10 years.” Mozaffarian and his colleagues studied the habits of 5,446 adults, average age 73, comparing their physical activities with the risk of developing atrial fibrillation. “No one has looked at exercise and atrial fibrillation in these older people,” he said.

Light Exercise Prevents Atrial Fibrillation in Elderly

Methylation can either make genes more or less responsive to bodily reactions, and therefore can change the way the gene acts or expresses proteins. Different genetic methylation patterns resulting from varying dietary habits may in part determine who gets diabetes and other such metabolic diseases and who does not. The new study in Sweden at the Lund University Diabetes Center had a group of men work out under the guidance of a trainer for six months. At the end of that time period, the men understandably had lost inches off their waists, lost fat, increased their endurance and improved their blood pressure and cholesterol readings. They also had altered the methylation pattern of many of the genes in their fat cells. The study reported that more than 17,900 sites on 7,663 separate genes had changed methylation patterns.
